What is Electrodeionization?

Electrodeionization (EDI) is a cutting-edge water treatment process designed to remove ionized and ionizable impurities from water without the use of chemicals. EDI produces ultra-pure water by combining ion exchange technology with direct current (DC) power. EDI systems are highly efficient, sustainable and widely used in applications requiring high-purity water, such as pharmaceuticals, electronics, and power generation.

How Does Electrodeionization Work?

EDI operates through an electro-chemical process involving specialized components:

  • Feed Water Pretreatment: First water is pretreated through reverse osmosis and enters the EDI system to remove bulk contaminants.
  • Ion Exchange Resin: In the next step, water flows through mixed-bed ion exchange resin, capturing dissolved ions and impurities.
  • Selective Membranes: In this step, Ions are directed through ion-specific membranes under the influence of DC power, allowing continuous separation of impurities.
  • Electric Field Activation: Here, electrical current continuously regenerates the resin and maintains uninterrupted operation.

Pure Water Output: The last step results in high-quality, ultra-pure water with resistivity levels exceeding 17 Megohms.

What are the Benefits of EDI?

  • Chemical-Free Operation: It eliminates the use of hazardous chemicals and ensures chemical free operations with reduced environmental impact.
  • Continuous Water Purification: It offers uninterrupted water purification without downtime for regeneration cycles, resulting in consistent water quality.
  • Lower Operating Costs: EDI is an energy-efficient process which reduces operational expenses and offers cost-effective solutions.

High Water Recovery Rates: It maximizes efficiency and conserves water resources effectively.
